Frequently Asked Questions...
Is a hard drive enclosure my best option for data transfer from pc to mac in my case?
I've got a Dell Inspiron 5600 whose screen is toast. I have no reason to believe that other functionality is impaired, but it was getting old and decrepit anyway, so I went ahead and made the switch to a new Macbook.
There are a few files on there that I'd like to retreive- nothing end of the world, go to extreme measures necessary, but I'd like to try. Since I have no display to navigate on the old laptop, that makes it more difficult.
Would a hard drive enclosure simply turn the hard drive from my pc into a spare external hard drive? Would functionality be impaired since it's a different platform (Windows vs. OS X)? If not an enclosure, what would you reccommend?
Answer:
An enclosure is a good idea especially since you will get an external hard drive afterwards, but you can still burn the files on a CD or thumb drive. Just plug another monitor in your video out (VGA/DVI/HDMI/etc..). Some computers allow you to plug it directly on the tv. So you don't need an enclosure, but if you don't mind paying for one, it's the second best solution!
