The Olympus XZ-1 is a compact digital camera that, on paper, want to shrink the gap between consumer P&S cameras and digital SLRs. It features a high-quality iZuiko ® (ZUIKO brand) fast lens, the same glass used with Olympus ZUIKO digital lenses for their DSLR cameras. The most obvious feature that makes DSLR cameras stand apart is the ability to blue the background out of focus and separate the subject.With a fast F1.8 maximum aperture settings, it is possible to blur the background, what wasn't possible in point-and-shoot cameras until now. The effect won't be as pronounced as in DSLR cameras due to their sensor size, but still, it would create that effect in some degree.
The Olympus XZ-1 also features a large 3.0-inch 610,000 dots vivid new OLED display at the back of the camera. The new display has wide viewing angles, deeper blacks and also consumes less power than previous displays. The back LCD is one of the most important aspects of P&S cameras, because the XZ-1 doesn't have a EVF (Electronic View Finder) and the composition/framing is done using the back LCD. Having a big high resolution LCD, makes taking photographs more enjoyable and composing images much easier. The large CCD also contributes to high dynamic range and smoother gradations. You should know that the Olympus XZ-1 accepts the VF-2 live-finder, that can be attached to the camera's accessory port and hot shoe.
