Trust and the Broken

'Without Trust, Communication and Honesty in any relationship - There is nothing to build upon...' Francesca Sedgwick

What happens if you try to build a house on sand? Try as you might, dig the foundations as deep as you want, paint the front door, choose curtains for the windows, put a welcome mat out, the house will fall down. Castles built on sand belong to the sea. Firm foundations matter, there are corners you cannot cut. The only way for a house to survive strong winds is to build the house to survive strong winds.

What is the foundation of any good relationship? You may say love. After all isn't that what the song says, all you need is love? But love can be distorted, people have been known to lie for love, they have been known to leave for love, some have been known to kill for love. Love can be obssessive and misplaced at times. Jesus said 'love God and love others', but He wasn't talking about the kind of love that we often experience. He was talking about the purest kind of love. Love that is safe, love that is honest, love that trusts, love that lives and breathes the truth, love that builds up.

So what is the foundation of a good relationship when very few people either love or are loved like that? The foundation is trust. Here are some words to help us understand what trust is. Belief in someone, assurance, certainty, confidence, faith, honesty, hope, protection, respect, safekeeping. In other words, trust is when somone believes in you, when you feel safe around them, when they protect you from harm.

When trust is broken, you get the opposite. Doubt, dishonesty, disrespect, fear, suspicion, wariness and skepticism. In the movie 'Meet the Fockers', Robert de Niro's character is a tough CIA man intent on protecting his daughter from her new husband, the entirely loveable Ben Stiller. At one point Stiller wakes up to find a picture pinned to his chest by de Niro while he was sleeping... The picture is of a neatly drawn circle and a little dot outside the circle. A neatly drawn circle of trust with an arrow pointing to the dot outside the circle and the word 'you' written next to the dot. Ben Stiller outside of the circle.

The circle of trust. A parent has the power to establish it with a child. A brother and sister can thrive in it. It is the basis for a peaceful, happy marriage. It gives friendship wings. Safe houses are built on it. Without it there are only jagged edges and ruins.

If your trust has been broken, the only One I know who can mend it is someone who came to show us what love really is. Jesus. He is sometimes misrepresented by those who claim to serve Him here, but He can be trusted. With anything, at any time. There may come a time when you are so broken that you find it impossible to trust anymore. It has happened to me more than once. He is a safe house. Ask for His help to rebuild yours.

He believes in you.
