Need to Change the Power Cord on your Range or Clothes Dryer? Here's Help!
Changing the power cord on the range or dryer is a situation that many people face at one time or another whether their moving into a new location or buying a new or used range or clothes dryer. If you need to change the power cord on your range or clothes dryer, there are some things you may want to consider before getting started. The first thing is if you've never worked with any type of electrical equipment at all, ever, ever, in your life, you may want to seek the help of someone that has or an electrician. Unless you feel comfortable working around electrical components, changing any type of power cord is not recommended.
You've been warned. Now for those that feel they can handle this type of operation, we'll get started with what you'll need. The first thing to understand about ranges and dryers for residential usage is the fact that they come in a couple different amp ratings in the US. 50AMP and 30AMP are the norm, but what makes it even worse is the fact that each of the two amp ratings will take two different plug-ends and or wall outlets. These plug-ends and wall outlets have 4 different configurations. 3-prong 3-blade, 3-prong 2-blades and an L, 4-prong 3-blades and a ground, 4-prong 2-blades a ground and an L. either one of these will come in either 50AMP or 30AMP depending on the configuration or the range or clothes dryer.
Now, this article is about changing the power cord, changing the wall receptacle will be in a future article. To start, if you're received a range or dryer that has plug-ends that do not match or, you've bought a new range or dryer and found that the power cord doesn't match the wall outlet, this is not a problem and can be changed very easily. If you are replacing an appliance it makes it easier because you can change one power cord with another. If you are replacing an appliance, you'll need to go to your local hardware store and buy a new power cord. Before you head out to the hardware store, take a digital picture of your wall outlet with a digital camera, phone, or if you don't have these items, take a piece of paper and pencil and lay the paper flat over the outlet and lightly trace the outline of the outlet.
When at the hardware store you will have a choice of a couple lengths like 4'ft or 6'ft, choose the 6'ft. When you get back home you will find that one style of power cable has 3 terminals while the other type has 4. Bookmark this page now so you can come back just in case you don't know. Every appliance is built to take either cable and on the back of the range or dryer the configuration will be the same each and every time. Take a look below to get an idea of how it works. The terminals will line up 3 across from right to left or left to right, the outer terminals are "HOT" and the center terminal is "NEUTRAL" so if you have 3 terminals, red, white, and black, in the USA the red and black are "HOT" and the white is "NEUTRAL."
So, when replacing the terminals on a 3 wire range or dryer, the red wire goes on one of the outer terminals, the black goes on the other outer terminal, and the white wire goes on the center terminal. The black and red wire can go on either outer terminal, but never on the center. Now, if you're replacing a 4 prong, the same principle applies however you will have one extra wire which is green. That wire will always be grounded to the appliance itself. Most appliances will have a green ground screw attached somewhere in the back near the wiring terminals. The process is extremely easy provided you've worked with electric equipment in the past.
