How to Replace Head Lights for Your Car
It is not difficult to change your head light. Knowing how to change car lighting is a basic necessity in car repair and maintenance. At the very least, every car driver should have a basic idea about what it entails. In many cases, the only tool you need in replacing head lights is the screwdriver. It is as simple as that so there is really no need to take your car to a mechanic that will charge a lot of money for this service.
Most cars use halogen lighting for the headlight. The bulb is found inside a large headlamp which you must unscrew before getting access to the bulb underneath. There are certain car models that use other types of lighting though. In these cases, you need to remove both the headlamp and the inner bulb simultaneously because they are set as one unit.
Before you get started, here are the items you need to have:
- Screwdriver
- Replacement bulb or headlamp & light bulb combo
- Flashlight
Step 1: Find the Light Bulb
Open the car hood and look at the area where the headlight is placed. You should be able to see the bulb holder there. Inspect the headlamp to know what kind of replacement is needed. If there is a plastic knob located at the back of the lamp, you require a halogen bulb replacement. If not, then your car requires a headlight and bulb combo (proceed to step 4).
Step 2: Remove the Cords
The head light obviously need power cords in order to function. You need to remove all wires that connect to the light bulb. There should be three of them (known as three-pronged connection). Take away the wiring harness; take note that different cars uses different types of clips. If your car has the plastic catch, just press the lever down and the plug will slide off.
On the other hand, the metal clip requires you to pull it away and it will come off completely from the lighting. The screw cap, meanwhile, needs to be unscrewed. Once you do this, the bulb should come out easily.
Step 3: Change the Light Bulb
Be ready with the replacement halogen light bulb. Be sure not to touch it with your finger because oil can damage the bulb or limit its useful life. Screw the knob and put the new bulb in the place where you removed the previous one. Open and close the car door to see if it is properly set.
Step 4: Test the Light Bulb
Open the car door and then turn on the headlight. Walk around the area and visually inspect your work. It is crucial to make sure that everything is set properly. It will help you avoid road problems and potential car lighting problems while ensuring your protection at the same time.
